What to Expect

Communication and cooperation leading to mutual trust and working together are the key factors in moving forward. Ultimately, we aim to engage the patient into taking responsibility for their health and therefore encourage a proactive  approach, with a view towards minimising a patient’s dependence on chiropractors, osteopaths, physiotherapists, painkillers, anti-inflammatories…

At your first appointment, you will be asked to complete a New Patient Questionnaire providing details of your medical history and your presenting symptoms or complaint.
(Please arrive 10 minutes early, if possible.)

Examination will focus on your neuro-musculo-skeletal system (nerves, muscles and joints) and a number of neurological, orthopaedic and chiropractic tests will be carried out with the aim of understanding what the underlying cause(s) of your symptoms may be. It may also be necessary to check your heart e.g. by measuring your blood pressure, lungs or abdomen to rule out other factors.  We will take time during the appointment to discuss your medical history, symptoms and initial findings with you.

Typically, initial findings may lead to:

  • immediate treatment during your first visit;
  • referral for further diagnostic tests such as X-rays, other scans or tests, if clinically indicated;
  • referral elsewhere, if your symptoms or condition is unsuitable for chiropractic treatment.

Clinic gowns are made available at each appointment to facilitate examination. However, if preferred, please bring along your own comfortable, loose-fitting clothing such as gym-wear or t-shirts and sweat pants.  You may want to continue to do this for follow-up treatments too.

At your next visit the findings of the examination and results of other tests will be gathered together and clearly explained to you. Our goal is to arrive at a working diagnosis: to discuss with you what can be done and what you can expect from treatment. We will recommend a plan of treatment specific to your needs.

The aim of treatment is to identify and correct the underlying cause of your symptoms and activate the body’s self-healing mechanisms. During the course of treatment, a picture of your state of healthwill begin to emerge through your responses to treatment. Therefore, your own monitoring of symptoms and feedback at each session is important.

Some conditions will take longer to resolve than others. In conjunction with treatment, you may also be prescribed a programme of exercises to aid rehabilitation and consolidate the benefits of treatment.
